State council approves draft law introducing “community police”

The State Council’s legislation section approved on Saturday a draft law adding a new division to the police authority entitled the “community police.”

The draft law, which comes as an amendment to the law governing the police authority, laid out the conditions for appointing and promoting members of the new division. It also granted community police members the jurisdiction to carry out arrest warrants.

The ministry of interior had proposed the draft law to the cabinet for consideration. Ayman Helmy, from the ministry’s press office, had told Aswat Masriya the new division was to enable the ministry to “communicate with the society.”

The draft law will be referred back to the cabinet. It needs the cabinet’s and the president’s approval before being issued.
